Visitors to the area have the opportunity to observe rare wildlife
including a family of bald
eagles, which have taken up residence in the Barton
Cove area, as part of a State
environmental
initiative which initially included the relocation of eagles to
Massachusetts from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The eagles may
be viewed live as they fly overhead, or on the Eagle cam, a video
broadcast that offers
both
live and tape delayed, close up video coverage of an eagles nest
located in the Cove area. This may be seen on the town's public
access, television channel, which is also available for public
viewing at the Great Falls
Discovery Center. (Town of Montague, Turner's Falls -
Website).
Poet's
Seat Tower is a sandstone lookout tower built in 1912. It was named
after a long tradition of poets being drawn to the spot. Poets have
long been inspired by the beautiful views throughout the Pioneer
Valley from this vantage point. Francis Goddard Tuckerman, a
Greenfield poet--and colleague of Thoreau--composed several poems at
this site. The tower sits atop Rocky Mountain,
overlooking High Street (Route 2A), and is accessible from Mountain
Road. (Franklin
County Chamber of Commerce)
